Teenagers with Literacy Difficulties

Posted on by tuitionwithclare

As children enter their teenage years their relationships with peers is more important than ever. Acceptance is key – they don’t want to stand out or be different to their peers. Coping with the challenges of adolescence and literacy difficulties can lead to some children becoming disengaged from their learning. They might have to work harder than their peers to complete the same amount of work; feel they know answers verbally but are frustrated by being unable to match their peers in reading, writing and spelling; have a lack of self confidence and feel worried about standing out from the crowd if they are given support.

Supporting your Child with Literacy Difficulties

Children with SpLD have to work harder throughout their school day. This is exhausting and they may be more easily tired. They may lack confidence and feel inadequate.

How can parents help their child succeed?

Show you understand their difficulties by listening to them and not dismissing their feelings. Build their confidence by balancing praising efforts and strengths with constructive criticism.

Embrace modern technology and encourage your child to use text readers and speech to text functions to complete homework tasks. If your child is open to developing their skills further, consider 1:1 support with a tutor.
